Spring Term

                                       MUSIC

In our music lessons, we have been looking at music from South and West Africa. We have been practicing verbal call and response to a popular African song called Shosholoza. We have looked at rhythms using percussion and djembe drums. Using our knowledge of beat, syncopation and call & response we improvised to create our own musical pieces. The weather was great when we were doing this so we were able to practice outside!

                                     PE

This term we have been doing gymnastics in PE. We have been looking at ways to move our bodies gracefully and with purpose. We have learnt how to do lots of different jumps, leaps and rolls and how to balance and create shapes with our bodies.
Because we have had some inclement weather, we have also played table tennis in the classroom and competed in timed Stacking Cup activities.

                                    DT

Our DT topic this term finished with us cooking spaghetti bolognese. We researched recipes; their nutritional value and costs. We also discovered how cattle are reared for food production. Before we started to cook, we watched a video that showed us to how to cut safely by creating a bridge with our fingers and keeping them well out of the way of our blades! We chopped onion, carrots and garlic to use in our recipe. We learned how to tell when the mince was cooked and took it in turns to cook our bolognese.

The start of our Spring term began with us creating pop-up books during DT. We used a variety of mechanisms including sliders, levers, wheels, automatic pull strings and parallel folds to enhance the story in our books which we shared with KS1.

                                       Science

We have looked at properties and changes of different materials (whether they are reversible or irreversible) We tried freezing things, melting things and burning things! We did an exciting experiment where we put different measurements of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda in balloons and recorded what happened to the size of the balloons.

In the second half of the term, we are looking at the planets and space.

During science week, we had a competition to build and fly paper aeroplanes. We thought about how to make our aircraft aerodynamic but also strong enough to be thrown through the school hall. The winner from our class was Levi who managed to make his aircraft reach the whole length of the school hall!

                           ART

In our art lessons we are doing some printing with Lino. We sketched a scene first and then transferred that to our Lino mat. VERY CAREFULLY we used cutting tools to carve out the lines and shapes we needed in order to create texture, foreground and background. Keep watching to see our finishined prints.

                                          Geography

Our oceans are amazing! We have been looking at the sheer scale of our oceans and how important they are. We have also explored how human behaviour is having a negative impact on our oceans and what we can do to help protect them.  We went on a local environment walk to search for signs of litter and damage to our waterways.

                                         English

In our English lessons we have been learning how to improve our writing with conjunctions, expanded noun phrases, different sentence starters, emotive language, fronted adverbials and relative clauses. We read a fantastic book about Ernest Shackleton and his ill fated expedition on the ship Endurance.

                                              Maths

So far this term we have looked at 3 digit x 2 digit multiplication, division and are currently exploring how to multiply a fraction by a whole number. We also took part in an online competition with TT Rockstars.
