Welcome to Year 4 Ash Class.
The children have settled in well to the new routines and been very eager to share their summer holiday stories.
Our Topic for the Autumn term is The Tudors and to get the children immersed into this subject, we have had History Off the Page come into school. We all dressed up as Tudors and had a wonderful day learning about what life was like as a Tudor. We made candles, wrote with a quill and made the ink, created bookmarks, sewed our initials into a handkerchief and visited the apothecary and the doctors. It was a very busy morning!
In the afternoon we had a banquet in the hall. Some of the children were servants, some were dancers, actors, singers while other got to sit at the top table and be entertained. Our feast included bread and cheese, fruit and we drank out of tankards.
The children thoroughly enjoyed their day.
In Maths, we have been recapping our knowledge and understanding of place value with numbers in the tens (some times hundreds) of thousands. The children are becoming more confident to order and compare larger numbers and as well as their use of mathematical vocabulary.
This term we are using the novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes for our English focus. We have introduced the Iron Man and discussed his features. Using expanded noun phrases and compounded sentences, the children have written some super descriptions. They are looking forward to reading on to find out what happens and have been making some interesting predictions.
Our science focus this term is electricity. We have started the unit by discussing which components are electrical and how we know. The children are very inquisitive and want to know how electricity and batteries work. They have also looked at some simple circuits and are learning the terminology for the different components such as cell, bulb, buzzers and switches.
