February
We continued our Amazing Animals topic by learning all about farm animals. We painted pigs and hens, cleaned muddy farm animals, and took part in animal name hunts in the garden to practise our writing skills. We also explored mark making in cornflour, developing our fine motor skills while learning through sensory play.
Chinese New Year
We have been celebrating Chinese New Year in Reception with lots of hands-on, creative activities. We enjoyed using chopsticks to try and pick up rice, both at the tuff tray and during playdough play, developing our fine motor skills. We also explored mark making by drawing patterns in flour using stencils, which sparked lots of curiosity and careful control.
One of our favourite activities was re-enacting the Chinese New Year animal race. We loved taking on different roles, racing to the finish and celebrating with winning badges. Through stories, role play and sensory activities, we have been learning about Chinese New Year traditions while building confidence, teamwork and imagination.
Children’s Mental Health Week
For Children’s Mental Health Week, we have been exploring the theme ‘This Is My Place’. During circle time, we used a teddy to support turn-taking, listening, and talking.
We enjoyed sitting in a circle and talking about questions such as: “Where do we feel safe?”, “Can we think of a time when we helped someone or someone helped us?”, and “How did that make us feel?”
We enjoyed sharing the places where we feel safe and happy, and it was lovely to hear that many of us feel safe at school and when we are with our friends.
Pancake Day
Reception had a wonderful time celebrating and learning through play!
We enjoyed making pancakes out of playdough and choosing our own delicious ingredients to add. There were lots of imaginative toppings as we mixed, rolled and shaped our pancakes carefully.
We had great fun trying to flip them in the frying pans, just like real chefs! It took lots of concentration and coordination, but we kept practising and didn’t give up.
We also explored mark making in flour, using our fingers to practise writing some of our red words. It was a fun (and slightly messy!) way to build our confidence with early writing skills while celebrating Pancake Day together. 🥞
