Middlefield Governor Profiles
Carol Besant
I have been teaching for 25 years and I'm proud to be the Headteacher of Middlefield Primary Academy. I began my teaching career at Ramsey Spinning Infants where I became Head of school. I joined the DLPT Trust in November 2018 as deputy head of Glebelands Primary. I started here at Middlefield in January 2020 as the Deputy Head and progressed onto the Headteacher role in September 2020.
My experience in education has involved working with all year groups and with the development of teachers and students.
I come from a small town in Wales called Aberdare. I love to greet the children every day with a bore da! Outside of school I enjoy walking my dog Marvin, reading and playing tennis with my husband.

I joined the Middlefield governing body in 2017, Soon after my children started at the school, I decided I would like to get involved in contributing to the school, originally this was just as a parent governor. But since my appointment I have also volunteered to sit on the DLPT Standards Committee. I also help with Midday Supervisor Cover when the school is short-handed.
I work for a local packaging company as a tooling co-ordinator, which allows me to be active in school life. I also coach mini’s at St. Neots Rugby Club.
I would like to think that Middlefield’s Children and Staff benefit from the support of the governing body.

I started my role as a parent Governor in 2021, my daughter was in EYFS and I wanted to get involved in supporting the school. I am on a steep learning curve as a Governor, but the training and networking provided by the DLPT has been invaluable. Due to COVID our meetings have all been via zoom since I started in my Governor role, but I have undertaken one learning visit and it was fantastic to see inside the school and some of the pupil’s work.
I live on the Parklands Estate and as well as my daughter now in Year 4, I also have a son who is in Year 1 at Middlefield. I work 4 days a week and any down time is precious, as a family we enjoy our holidays and getting outside and being active. I am a member of St Neots Triathlon Club and Riverside Runners and have recently taken up Karate with my daughter, we are both thoroughly enjoying learning new skills.

I joined the Governor team in 2021, as a parent Governor, it has been a strange start during Covid-19 times, but has not stopped the team from doing what is needed for the school.
My daughter is currently in year 4, and my son is in year 3, so know how great Middlefield Academy already is, and wanted to join the Governors to help where I can to support and improve our amazing school.
I live in the Parklands Estate, and work as a Slimming World consultant, running groups locally. In our spare time we love doing things together as a family, both my wife and I have a love for travel and exploring, which we seem to have passed to to our children.
Becky Richards – Community Governor
I joined Middlefield in September 2024 as a community governor after being involved in local school governance since 2018 where I have developed essential school leadership skills and experience through Cambridgeshire County Council led training whilst governing a local authority maintained school and by chairing Boards, committees and panels. Being involved in school governance has provided me with positive challenges and it is personally rewarding to know that I am contributing to society. Previous to school governance, my business career was in the private sector working primarily within legal and corporate governance both UK and internationally. I left the industry when my youngest daughter was born to set up my own music tuition business (having played the piano since childhood), so I could continue working while raising a young family. I now provide a service to local primary schools, including here at Middlefield on Tuesdays, and teach privately from home delivering individual and group instrumental lessons and music theory. When I investigated the role of a community governor for Middlefield, I felt it was a perfect opportunity to be involved in a local school where I could continue to use my governing skills and experience.
I aspire to be of value to Middlefield’s Local Governing Board by providing strategic experience to help drive improvement and success so that the staff and pupils feel valued and respected, and that pupils thrive and achieve both academically and through their personal development and confidence. I feel very privileged to be part of this wonderful school and I hope my contributions can make a positive impact and difference.
Outside of school, I enjoy being with my husband and daughters, playing tennis, reading and of course playing my piano at any opportunity! I am also a volunteer artistic roller skating instructor and the Welfare Officer for St Neots Tennis Club.
