Mr Manly was in charge today…
PE
Mr Franco set up a crazy golf course in the ice zone! Lots of fun was had by all.
Sound and vibrations
In science this half term we are learning about sound and vibrations. We have been looking at various instruments to discover what soundwaves are and how they travel. We used cups and string to send messages to each other, exploring how the sound travels along the string. We linked it to our previous learning of states of matter, also finding out how dolphins communicate underwater.

Condensing and evaporating
In science we have been experimenting with condensing and evaporating to further our understanding of changing states of matter. First of all, we identified the property changes as a material evaporates or condenses by breathing on the window and drawing on it. Next, we worked scientifically to predict how temperature affects evaporation rates and if wind has an affect on evaporation rates. Using different temperature water initially, we measured the time it took for our finger to dry. We went on to add in the wind by blowing on our fingers and repeating the experiment with warm water.
DT
Using plasticine and toothpicks, we have been experimenting with building free-standing frame structures. These structures need to be strong and stable so we tried different shapes and designs to see what worked best. We looked at and discussed some famous pavillions to inspire our own designs, including the Eiffel Tower. We are looking forward to constructing these over the next two weeks.
Melting and freezing
As part of our states of matter topic in science, we are looking at the conditions needed for melting and freezing. We are able to describe the property changes as a material melts or freezes, changing from a solid to a liquid or a liquid to a solid. As part of our scientific enquiry we used thermometers accurately to observe different temperatures and the affect on melting.
Forest school
This week we had the opportunity for firelighting. This isn’t always as easy as it looks and led to some amazing demonstrations of perseverence and resilience. There will be more opportunities to refine this skill over the coming weeks.
Maths
Here we are doing some TT rockstars in the classroom. We are also practicing on the laptops, seeing how many questions we can answer correctly out of 25 with only 6 seconds per question.
Forest school
Out first session of forest school in year 4 was a bright but cold one! It was lovely to see lots of teamwork and imaginations being used. Look out for more photos over the coming weeks.
